DIY Garbage Disposal Cleaning Tabs

Tired of that stinky sink drain? Make your own Deodorizer Tabs with this easy recipe.

Ingredients
2 cups baking soda
1 cup salt
½ cup water
⅓ cup unscented liquid castile soap (you could also use Peppermint)
30 drops Lemon oil

Note: Liquid castile soap is a vegetable-based soap commonly found in health food stores.

Instructions

  1. Combine baking soda and salt into bowl.
  2. Add castile soap and essential oil into mixture.
  3. Add water, one tablespoon at a time, and stir until the mix forms into the consistency of “damp sand”. It should stay together when pressed. If you add too much water just add some more baking soda and salt until the consistency is right. Getting the mix the right consistence was the biggest challenge with this project.  Don’t throw any of this away if the water isn’t correct. Simply add more dry ingredients or skip the ball making and store it in your container with a scooper to drop it into the disposal. This step will take some practice and patience.
  4. Scoop the mix into a spoon and shape it into mounds on your parchment paper.
  5. Once the mixture has been scooped, let dry for 24 hours or until they are hard. One batch should make about 36 garbage disposal refreshers.
  6. Put into glass jar and use the next time you do dishes. Just put 1–3 refreshers into the garbage disposal and turn it on. You will immediately smell the refreshing scent of Lemon essential oil or the aroma blend you choose. I’ve listed several suggestions below.

Homemade Essential Oil Aromadough

During those rainy days or cold mornings, are you looking for ways to entertain your kiddos with some kid-friendly activities? Making homemade essential oil aromadough is a great way to introduce your children to essential oils and have them experience the benefits of essential oils in a fun and approachable way.  Kids use all of their senses when playing, so why not provide a way to get the therapeutic benefits of essential oil while they play? Don’t have essential oils, no problem! Purchase pure essential oils here!

There are several recipes for homemade essential oil aromadough (or others call it play dough) circulating on the internet and we found this one works well when incorporating essential oils.  You can use any brand of essential oil, but we have chosen to use Doterra essential oils, because we know the oil is pure, doesn’t contain synthetics, and offers therapeutic benefits in addition to smelling great.

Aromadough Step 1: Gather your ingredients before starting your project.

Recipe for Homemade Essential Oil Aromadough (Essential Oil Playdough)

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Few drops of food coloring
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.5 ml) essential oils of your choice click here to purchase essential oils for your homemade essential oil aromadough.

Mix together flour, salt, cream of target, oil and water in a medium sauce pan.  Stir in food coloring and cook on medium-low heat until the dough begins to form a ball.

Let cool on parchment paper or wax paper.  I like to let it cool for at least an hour to make sure any residual water evaporates. Make sure to store your Aromadough in airtight containers and include a label with the oil name and oils emotional benefit for quick reference. We like to use inexpensive plastic containers or ziplock bags. This dough will last a few weeks in a cool space and will remain soft and pliable. If you store the dough for longer, please check to make sure it has begun to mold prior to allowing little hands to play with the dough.

Aromadough Step 5: After the ball has cooled, poke holes in the dough with your finger to create spaces to easily add the essential oil drops. Add oil and then you may wish to mix the dough (with or without gloves) so that the undiluted oil gets mixed into the dough (dispersing it) before your little helper begins to play with your creation.

Colors and Flavors

Ask your child to smell the essential oil and choose the color he or she thinks matches it for your Aroma Playdough.  Below are essential oil suggestions and therapeutic benefits for each:

  • Dark Green – Green Mandarin – Uplifts the mood and soothing for the nervous system. This aroma seems to cover the smell of the ingredients well. We think Green Mandarin Essential Oil smells like Pez candy.
  • Purple – Lavender – Comfort & Calming
  • Green – Lime – Mood Lifter & Refreshing
  • Pink – Grapefruit – Energize, Mental Clarity & Memory
  • Orange – Wild Orange – Focus
  • Blue Peppermint – Energy
  • Yellow Lemon – Clarity

Instructions

  1. Gather your supplies and cover your work surface with an absorbent cloth. Some essential oils may dull the finish of your work surface if accidently absorbed.
  2. Select your glass or stainless steel bottle. This recipe calls for a 4 oz bottle, but you are welcome to use larger spray bottles. Just make sure to increase the amount of oil and water in the recipe. Note: Some essential oils will degrade plastic or foam, so we recommend glass or stainless steep when making sprays containing essential oils.
  3. Apply a label to your glass bottle identifying what’s inside or what the mixture is used for. We called our mixture Go Away Bug Spray. Visit my Amazon affiliate link to view label options. You will not incur any additional cost by using this link, this is simply Amazon’s way to thank me for suggesting some of their products to you.
  4. Add essential oil to your glass spray bottle by tilting the essential oil bottle on its side. Do not shake the oil from the bottle – you will add more drops that you intended.  Add a total of 10 drops of essential oil. We used 8 drops Peppermint Essential Oil and 2 drops Wild Orange Essential Oil.
  5. Add about 4 oz (1/2 cup) of water to your bottle.  We used tap water, because we intended to use the spray immediately. If you are making the spray to store for later, use distilled water.
  6. Secure the spray nozzle to the bottle and shake the liquid to mix.
  7. You are ready to spray your entry ways, windowsills, garage, basement, or garden beds.  Oil and water don’t mix well, so make sure to give it a shake as you spray.
