Today, we are talking about one an oil that I use everyday to boost my mood and settle my jittery stomach. Peppermint Essential Oil promotes healthy respiratory function and clear breathing, alleviates occasional stomach upset, and is frequently used in toothpaste and for benefits for oral health.

Uses for Peppermint Oil

It’s About Air Flow. When sinuses seem to be clogged, and throats swollen and scratchy, diffuse peppermint oil (or apply topically on the chest) for almost immediate relief and revitalizing air flow. Peppermint acts as an expectorant and may provide relief for colds, cough, sinusitis, asthma, and bronchitis.

Cool the Joints. When the ravages of time wreak havoc on your joints, leaving that hot and achy feeling, peppermint oil mixed with lavender oil cools like an ice bath, but you to stay warm and dry.

Energize Your Lather. Some shampoo and conditioner combos can make you want to go back to sleep. No energy. No pep. No fun. Not good. Add peppermint to your potions to stimulate the scalp, energize and wake up! The oil is an antiseptic in nature, and can also help remove dandruff and lice.

Seasonal Threats Beware. Peppermint oil has the ability to relax smooth muscles in the body — the same muscles that line our airways and become affected in allergy season. Peppermint oil (with lemon) should certainly be another arrow in your allergy treatment quiver!

Chase Away Tension Headaches. Got a mind numbing headache? A few drops of peppermint dabbed on your temples, neck and sinuses can quickly spring into action and chase that headache away!

Help Kids Get on the Ball. The next time Junior is a little unresponsive to all that is going on with school and homework, try spritzing a little peppermint on his shirt before study time, placing drop on the tongue or under the nose for improved concentration and alertness.

Seep, Soak & Revitalize. After a long day, apply peppermint, let it seep in and then soak in a warm bath or shower. The refreshing peppermint vapor will make you feel cool, relaxed and energized again. 47. Add a Refreshing Kick to Your Tea. Just one drop of peppermint oil can add life to any herbal tea (without having to add lots of sugar) while also aiding in normal digestion or to relieve heartburn.

A “Should I Work Out Today?” Antidote. You ask yourself this question. It’s OK. Using peppermint oil prior to exercise immediately awakens your senses and gets you in your right mind so you can crank.

A Snack Vendor’s Nightmare. When you get that mid-morning craving, diffuse peppermint oil to reign in the urge to snack on junk food, or anything else that might appear before you.

Wake Up Your Mind. Peppermint oil activates the limbic function in your brain.  The limbic function helps control things like emotions and long-term memory and is related to olfactory structures in your nose.

An Itch Fix. If you have the after effects of a sunburn where skin is a little warm and itchy, apply a drop of peppermint oil (mixed with lavender) to cool, soothe and stop itching.

Theme Park Relief. If you’ve got that “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I just went on a spinning ride” feeling, four or five drops of peppermint rubbed on the stomach can calm smooth stomach muscles and help dispel discomfort.

Travel to the Arctic, Without Traveling. When you add a few drops of peppermint to your ice water, it not only improves the taste, but also leaves you with a feeling of cool, refreshing arctic wind in your airways!

Burrow No More. If you find a tick has decided to make your skin its home, just give that tick a nice bath of peppermint oil with a cotton swab. The tick will stop burrowing, remove its head and then he’s yours.

Don’t Make It Easy on the Critters. Many household bugs do not like peppermint oil — ants, aphids, beetles, plant lice, mice and cockroaches try to steer clear of peppermint. Just add to water in a spray bottle and spray where you think pests grace you with their presence!

Clean Naturally. Peppermint oil is a wonderful natural cleaning agent because it has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Spray on countertops and bathroom surfaces, scrub, and enjoy cleaner clean.

Sleep like a Baby. If you find you are having a hard time sleeping, peppermint oil helps activate cold-sensitive receptors in the skin and mucosal tissues. When used this way, it may help with insomnia.

Quell Apathy. When you’re with someone who feels gloomy or like they “just don’t care”, ask them to try peppermint oil (aromatically, topically, or internally) to stimulate their mental sharpness and focus.

It’s About a State of Mind. Someone’s mental outlook can be a game changer. If they are shocked, stressed out or nervous, peppermint oil may help restore feelings of normalcy and balance.

Alleviate Internal Strife. When used topically or internally, peppermint is a favorite for fresh relief from cramping, indigestion to diarrhea. Skip the antacids and go with peppermint oil!

Leap from Lethargic. Feeling lethargic or in a brain fog? Peppermint has been known to improve blood circulation and awareness, leaving you with an energized, awake feeling.

Go Eight-Leg Free. When you diffuse peppermint into the room, you’ll notice fewer spiders. Why? They don’t like it.  It’s safe, contains no harsh chemicals or pesticides. It doesn’t kill the spiders, but forces them out.

Essential Oils 007: Frankincense Essential Oil

Meet my friend Frank! Frankincense that is.

Known throughout history as the oil of the Kings, Frankincense is one amazing oil. Many say, if you can only have one oil in your box, this is the one to have. This powerhouse oil helps build and maintain a healthy immune system, promotes cellular health, reduces the appearance of blemishes and rejuvenates skin, supports healthy immune system function, promotes feelings of peace, relaxation,
satisfaction, and overall wellness all in one little drop!

According to Dr. Axe, Frankincense oil comes from the Boswellia serrata tree. This is a tree native to India that produces special compounds that have been found to have strong anti-inflammatory, and potentially anti-cancer, effects. Among the valuable boswellia tree extracts that researchers have identified, several stand out as being most beneficial, including terpenes and boswellic acids, which are strongly anti-inflammatory and protective over healthy cells. (1)

Frankincense oil is used by either inhaling the oil or absorbing it through the skin, usually mixed with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil or jojoba oil. It’s believed that the oil transmits messages to the limbic system of the brain, which is known to influence the nervous system. A little bit of oil goes a long way, and it should not be ingested in large quantities as it can be toxic.

Oil Quality – Make sure you are using Frankincense that is pure.

If you’re purchasing essential oils, avoid oils that say “fragrance oil” or “perfume oil” as these can be synthetic and don’t provide the desired health benefits. Instead, look for oils that say “pure essential oil” or “100% essential oil” for the highest quality essential oils. I like to take advantage of the best frankincense oils, which should feature a combination of multiple varieties of oils from boswellia trees. My favorite brand is Doterra.

Vanderbilt Medical Center shared success with their pilot study of using essential oils as a calming tool for patients and staff.  Watch the news clip here.  https://youtu.be/31FqzR-KvSs

Essential Oils 003: Ways to use Essential Oils

How to use essential oils

Essential oils are used for a very wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends in one of three methods:

Aromatic – Certain essential oils, when diffused, can be very stimulating, while others can be calming and soothing. Diffusing essential oils can also cleanse and purify the air of unwanted odors.

Topical – Essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically.

Internal – Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements for targeted wellness.

Essential oils are both exciting and promising when it comes to taking care of your own and your family’s health. Whether you’re applying essential oils topically, enjoying the aromatic benefits through diffusing, or taking essential oils internally, the positive effects of essential oils are boundless.

That’s why you’ll want to ensure that the essential oils you are using are capable of delivering on their promise. You’ll want to make sure that you are choosing essential oils for their potency and their purity.

Essential Oils 002: Essential Oils Changed My Life!

In this episode, I discuss:

A bit about me

I became interested in essential oils years ago when I was desperately seeking solutions for medical related problems that seemed to have no easy treatment.  As a child, I had terrible stomach issues that were attributed to anxiety and a dairy allergy, and those progressed during my college years into a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia.  Moving into my 30’s, those symptoms became a moving target and were given ominous titles like Fibromyalgia, TMJ, Irritable bowel, Sleep Disorder, Infertility, and was topped off with a large dose of daily generalized anxiety.

I went round and round with traditional medical tests only to find these conditions were difficult to diagnose and treat and most were not even covered by insurance.  Sure there were all kinds of prescriptions to try, but the side effects were worse than the actual problems I was having. Now in my 40’s, I’ve found the answer to improving these weird conditions in the form of Essential Oils.

When I first tried Essential Oils, I didn’t see any improvement.  I now realize, I was using synthetic oils that had no therapeutic benefit. When I was reintroduced to the oils, I was cautiously skeptical, but quickly found them to be extremely helpful. Yeah! I had found my answers to improved health. Contact me at askDanaMitchell@gmail.com to learn about my favorite brand of essential oils.

For the last few years, I’ve experimented with different oils and shared what I’ve learned with family and friends and continue to learn about these amazing gifts of the earth.  I can help you Master Essential Oils.

Why I use essential Oils

To care for my family in a healthy and natural way.  When my daughter came into our lives, she had a severe dairy & soy allergy, major reflux, around the clock colic, and never – I mean NEVER – slept.  She had sensitivities to things like foods, textures, and smells, but thankfully we have figured those out.  Here we are years later and she is growing and maturing along with her peers.  My search for solutions started with our daughter, and led me to essential oils, which has ended up helping all of us.  Click here to see a video about why I love essential oils.

Quick Start

Talk to your family and decide if essential oils are right for you!

Essential Oils 001: What are Essential Oils?

These amazing gifts of the earth have transformed our lives, but for many people essential oils seem scary and complicated. My hope is to make these natural remedies approachable and fun.

Together, we’ll learn how to use essential oils as our first line of defense for minor health issues, make our home healthy, and to manage our emotions.

What are essential oils?

They are natural compounds derived from plants, and have been used throughout history as a way to naturally care for and support overall health.

The Egyptians were some of the first people to use aromatic essential oils extensively in medical practice, beauty treatment, food preparation, and in religious ceremony.  You may have heard of Frankincense and Myrrh through the references to these oils in the bible.  Did you know that these oils are still used today and are two very awesome and powerful essential oils?

Essential Oils:

  • are made from natural volatile aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants.
  • provide plants with protection against environmental threats and play a role in plant pollination.  When essential oils are made from parts of the plant, they take on the regenerating, protective and immune-strengthening properties of plants.
  • are powerful antioxidants and many varieties have antibacterial, antifungal, anti-infectious, antimicrobial, antitumor, antiparasitic, antiviral and antiseptic properties.
  • are both small in molecular size and are also lipid soluble, allowing many of them to easily and quickly penetrate the skin.
  • have been proven to also possess medicinal and therapeutic values and are growing in popularity among those of us who are looking for a more natural and organic way to manage our health, clean our homes, and care for our families.
  • have been used by many cultures throughout history for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices and continue to be a staple in many households today.

Purity and Quality

Are all essential oils created equal? No, they are not!  That’s why there is such a wide range of pricing for essential oils.  You can find all types (or grades) of essential oils sold online and in retail establishments, but you’ll want to educate yourself on quality standards before using just any oil.

These volatile liquids are either distilled or cold pressed (citrus mainly) from various parts of the plant. Some manufacturers use fillers, synthetics or include weeds and other plant material in their oil production to get more volume to provide oil at a lower cost.  The oil industry isn’t yet regulated and just because the label says “Pure” or “Organic” doesn’t mean that it really is.

Producing pure oils can be very costly, because it requires several hundred (or thousand) pounds of plant material to extract one pound of pure essential oil.
