Podcast 003: Ways to use Essential Oils

How to use essential oils

Essential oils are used for a very wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends in one of three methods:

Aromatic – Certain essential oils, when diffused, can be very stimulating, while others can be calming and soothing. Diffusing essential oils can also cleanse and purify the air of unwanted odors.

Topical – Essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically.

Internal – Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements for targeted wellness.

Essential oils are both exciting and promising when it comes to taking care of your own and your family’s health. Whether you’re applying essential oils topically, enjoying the aromatic benefits through diffusing, or taking essential oils internally, the positive effects of essential oils are boundless.

That’s why you’ll want to ensure that the essential oils you are using are capable of delivering on their promise. You’ll want to make sure that you are choosing essential oils for their potency and their purity.

Podcast 002: Essential Oils Changed My Life!

In this episode, I discuss:

A bit about me

I became interested in essential oils years ago when I was desperately seeking solutions for medical related problems that seemed to have no easy treatment.  As a child, I had terrible stomach issues that were attributed to anxiety and a dairy allergy, and those progressed during my college years into a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia.  Moving into my 30’s, those symptoms became a moving target and were given ominous titles like Fibromyalgia, TMJ, Irritable bowel, Sleep Disorder, Infertility, and was topped off with a large dose of daily generalized anxiety.

I went round and round with traditional medical tests only to find these conditions were difficult to diagnose and treat and most were not even covered by insurance.  Sure there were all kinds of prescriptions to try, but the side effects were worse than the actual problems I was having. Now in my 40’s, I’ve found the answer to improving these weird conditions in the form of Essential Oils.

When I first tried Essential Oils, I didn’t see any improvement.  I now realize, I was using synthetic oils that had no therapeutic benefit. When I was reintroduced to the oils, I was cautiously skeptical, but quickly found them to be extremely helpful. Yeah! I had found my answers to improved health. Contact me at askDanaMitchell@gmail.com to learn about my favorite brand of essential oils.

For the last few years, I’ve experimented with different oils and shared what I’ve learned with family and friends and continue to learn about these amazing gifts of the earth.  I can help you Master Essential Oils.

Why I use essential Oils

To care for my family in a healthy and natural way.  When my daughter came into our lives, she had a severe dairy & soy allergy, major reflux, around the clock colic, and never – I mean NEVER – slept.  She had sensitivities to things like foods, textures, and smells, but thankfully we have figured those out.  Here we are years later and she is growing and maturing along with her peers.  My search for solutions started with our daughter, and led me to essential oils, which has ended up helping all of us.  Click here to see a video about why I love essential oils.

Quick Start

Talk to your family and decide if essential oils are right for you!

Podcast 001: What are Essential Oils?

These amazing gifts of the earth have transformed our lives, but for many people essential oils seem scary and complicated. My hope is to make these natural remedies approachable and fun.

Together, we’ll learn how to use essential oils as our first line of defense for minor health issues, make our home healthy, and to manage our emotions.

What are essential oils?

They are natural compounds derived from plants, and have been used throughout history as a way to naturally care for and support overall health.

The Egyptians were some of the first people to use aromatic essential oils extensively in medical practice, beauty treatment, food preparation, and in religious ceremony.  You may have heard of Frankincense and Myrrh through the references to these oils in the bible.  Did you know that these oils are still used today and are two very awesome and powerful essential oils?

Essential Oils:

  • are made from natural volatile aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants.
  • provide plants with protection against environmental threats and play a role in plant pollination.  When essential oils are made from parts of the plant, they take on the regenerating, protective and immune-strengthening properties of plants.
  • are powerful antioxidants and many varieties have antibacterial, antifungal, anti-infectious, antimicrobial, antitumor, antiparasitic, antiviral and antiseptic properties.
  • are both small in molecular size and are also lipid soluble, allowing many of them to easily and quickly penetrate the skin.
  • have been proven to also possess medicinal and therapeutic values and are growing in popularity among those of us who are looking for a more natural and organic way to manage our health, clean our homes, and care for our families.
  • have been used by many cultures throughout history for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices and continue to be a staple in many households today.

Purity and Quality

Are all essential oils created equal? No, they are not!  That’s why there is such a wide range of pricing for essential oils.  You can find all types (or grades) of essential oils sold online and in retail establishments, but you’ll want to educate yourself on quality standards before using just any oil.

These volatile liquids are either distilled or cold pressed (citrus mainly) from various parts of the plant. Some manufacturers use fillers, synthetics or include weeds and other plant material in their oil production to get more volume to provide oil at a lower cost.  The oil industry isn’t yet regulated and just because the label says “Pure” or “Organic” doesn’t mean that it really is.

Producing pure oils can be very costly, because it requires several hundred (or thousand) pounds of plant material to extract one pound of pure essential oil.

Diffusing Essential Oils

Diffusing essential oils is my favorite way to use them. This is like having a natural, healthy, aroma for your room without all of the nasty issues that go along with burning candles or using wall socket plug ins.  Diffusing essential oils allows you and your family to enjoy the aromatic therapeutic benefits of essential oils while also freshening the air.

Where to get a diffuser?   There are many awesome diffusers on the market.  Here’s a link of several available on Amazon. I’m an Amazon affiliate which means that if you decide to purchase a product after clicking on this link, they send me a little thank you check at no extra cost to you.

What type of diffuser to use? You want to use a cold vapor type of diffuser, because heating therapeutic essential oils can change their properties thus losing some of the benefits. The larger the water reservoir the longer the machine can diffuse. Many diffusers have timers, lights, or auto turn off when empty. There are so many styles to fit your room décor or purpose. My daughter uses one as a night light for her room.

How do you use a diffuser?  To use, simply add your essential oil drops (5-8 depending on the size of your diffuser), fill the reservoir with room temperature tap water, and then plug in and turn on. You are good to go. Easy!  Note: most diffusers have a max fill line. Make sure you don’t fill the water above that line. If you do, the diffuser vapor may not come out. That cold vapor is what brings you the wonderful aromatic and therapeutic benefits.

Below are a few of our Family Favorite blends to diffuse.

Rest Essential Oil Diffuser Blend

Instructions

  1. Gather your supplies and cover your work surface with an absorbent cloth. Some essential oils may dull the finish of your work surface if accidently absorbed.
  2. Select your glass or stainless steel bottle. This recipe calls for a 4 oz bottle, but you are welcome to use larger spray bottles. Just make sure to increase the amount of oil and water in the recipe. Note: Some essential oils will degrade plastic or foam, so we recommend glass or stainless steep when making sprays containing essential oils.
  3. Apply a label to your glass bottle identifying what’s inside or what the mixture is used for. We called our mixture Go Away Bug Spray. Visit my Amazon affiliate link to view label options. You will not incur any additional cost by using this link, this is simply Amazon’s way to thank me for suggesting some of their products to you.
  4. Add essential oil to your glass spray bottle by tilting the essential oil bottle on its side. Do not shake the oil from the bottle – you will add more drops that you intended.  Add a total of 10 drops of essential oil. We used 8 drops Peppermint Essential Oil and 2 drops Wild Orange Essential Oil.
  5. Add about 4 oz (1/2 cup) of water to your bottle.  We used tap water, because we intended to use the spray immediately. If you are making the spray to store for later, use distilled water.
  6. Secure the spray nozzle to the bottle and shake the liquid to mix.
  7. You are ready to spray your entry ways, windowsills, garage, basement, or garden beds.  Oil and water don’t mix well, so make sure to give it a shake as you spray.
